about kidney disease
Blazing Grace Medical (BGM) is a Medical Practice developed by Dr. Obioma Onuorah, MD. BGM opened its doors to serve the people of Southeastern Washington and Northeastern Oregon in the field of nephrology (diseases of the kidney) and hypertension. BGM is an adult nephrology practice which caters to individuals over the age of 18 (though on rare occasions, with expert guidance from pediatric nephrologists at Children's Hospitals in Seattle and Spokane, individuals aged 16-18 transitioning from pediatric nephrology care may be accommodated).
Individuals at highest risk of developing CKD include those with diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and those with history of kidney failure. Demographic groups with the highest risk for developing CKD include women, African-Americans, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, and seniors.
Other groups are not immune, though. Over 37 million people in the US (15% of the adult population) and approximately 90% of those with CKD don't even know they have it. One in three American adults, ~80 million people is at risk for CKD. Around 38% of people aged over 65, ~13% of people aged 45 to 64 and ~7% of people aged 18 to 44 have chronic kidney disease (CKD).
The prevalence of end stage renal disease continues to rise, with a 2.6% increase between 2016 and 2017.
Serum creatinine is used as an indicator for kidney disease. For adults, dialysis is recommended when EGFR levels reach approx. 10 mL per minute without recalcitrant electrolyte abnormalities. Life expectancy on dialysis depends on presence of other medical conditions.

|
Hypertension
Patients who have chronic high blood pressure are at risk for kidney damage. Elderly adults are at higher risk than others.
|
CKD
